Winner of The 2004 Yuki Shimizu Award

How cute is she! That is my first impression toward a four-year-old girl Young Ju. The abundance of illustrations, examples, and explanation makes her a attracting character in the book. Also, it helped to lead the reader to sympathize what she had gone thorough when she left her home town. Moreover, the explanation of her experience is so rich and real that it gave me the chance to think about when I left my hometown and it even made me homesick.
I think there is a difference of willingness to come here between me and her. Although I am not sure if “America” is heaven or not, I had more expectation than her before I came here. She didn’t know anything about “America” before she came here and she even misunderstood between heaven and “America”. She was confusing to find the reasons why she had to wear the cute dress, to be curly hair, and to leave her home country. However, I did not a very hard time to leave Japan. I think that may be because of my age and my background. I had more chances than her to hear what kind of place is “America” from my friends, parents, and teachers. Their talk made me to expect “America” that has more chance to study whatever I want to study. Also, I believed that I have many opportunities to know variety of interesting people here. My willingness and ambition toward “America” was so strong that it made my parents surprised. Because I (who used to be so lazy) had been working hard when I was a high school student to save money and had tried to study English or “language in Heaven” which I got a “D” in the class. So I was looking forward to coming and studying here. Now that I am here, I have a wonderful time.

Comments:
I agree with Yuki’s point of view about Young Ju. She is very cute and naïve. Yuki knew more about America than Young Ju. He is not like Young Ju who is four years old and only knows that Mi Gook is heaven. Young Ju only did whatever her parents said. On the other hand, Yuki got more information about America from her friends, news, family, etc until he decided himself to come to America, so that he knew the purposes of coming to America and wanted to achieve. In my opinion, I also have the same experience with Yuki when I decided to come to America. I knew the information about America was from my sisters, friends, and my teachers. At the first time, I do not have confident to come to America because I can not speak and understand English. However, I believed that I will learn a lot when I come to America and really practice the languages itself. And that is true. I got wonderful experiences when I came here. First, my English is much better than before, because I have to interact with a real American daily or other country’s people whom we can communicate only in English. I learned to be more confident to talk and initiate the conversation with people in America whether American or other countries who live in America. Secondly, I knew various people with different culture. We do not speak English fluently however we can respect and understand each other. This learning experience is very awesome and challenging. I do not regret to come to America even though at the first time I was really afraid of trying a new experience in a different place where is far away from my country. I learn the language and also I get more knowledge from America.
