Reponse post #2 (from Po-Kai)

____In the “A Step from Heaven” page 27 to 59, AnNa describes her school life and how the new family member, Joon, affects her life. Young Ju shows about how language barrier influences her in the first school day. She cannot understand and speak English, so she learns by watching. Then, she adds that her father rents a house and moves out from her aunt’s house. Her father even hits her mother during the conversation about moving out because her father feels no privacy and no dignity when they stay in Gomo’s hours. After they move out few months, AnNa’s family has a new family member; Park Joon Ho. Young Ju feels that she cannot get attention from her parent anymore because they focus on her baby brother. Because of that, she does not like her younger bother, and even in the school, she tells a lie that her brother is dying. However, in the “Being Older” section, Young Ju shows that she becomes a really older sister because she starts to take care of her younger brother.
____From these sections of “A Step from Heaven”, I can feel that AnNa does not like the notion or custom which is boys are better than girls from Korean traditional custom. This kind of custom also exists in Chinese society. However, I was surprised by AnNa’s behaviors in the school because it makes me feel that she hate her baby brother. I cannot believe she did that in the school for her family. I have two younger bothers, but I never have that kind of situations with Young Ju. I think maybe because she cannot to adjust her mood when she first becomes an older sister. From her novel, I also found that her father have very large pressure for holding his family. He wants to keep his male dignity and privacy, so he chooses to move out from his sister-in-law’s house. According to live independent, he needs to work for two jobs. I think pressure is the main reason that her father always not happy and solemn.
