post #1 for a step from heaven (Vonny Sukri)

From page 7 to page 27 in the “A Step from Heaven” by Anna, the author talks about how Young Ju and her family moved from Korea to America. In Page 11, Young Ju’s father, Apa said that it is easy to make a lot of money in America and it does not require high education. I do not agree with Apa’s opinion in this situation. I think that in America you have to receive a high education in an important school in order to get a good job that will give a high income. In America, there are a lot of competitions in the job market. Yet, when I was in Indonesia, I realized that there are a lot of people that have similar opinion with Apa. There are many communities that believe it is easy to find job that will give high income in USA. They all feel that once you moved to America, you will receive a better live. However, I saw there are many immigrants that moved to America and become a burden toward their families. There are immigrants that do not find job and become homeless people. In page 26, Sahmchun said “Mi Gook is almost as good as heaven.” I do not agree with this statement because according to this sentence, America is the second best place to be after heaven. This sentence also refers that America is almost as good as heaven. Nonetheless, after I moved to America, I realized that America is not as good as it sounds. There are many violence, poverties, sadness, and problems to encounter in this country. Even though USA is known as land of freedom and opportunity, I find that it is not true for everybody. Some people can be worse of by moving to America. For example, there is a person that I know who has a pretty good job in Indonesia, and then he moved to USA in hope to find a better live. However, once he moved here, he did not find any good job; therefore, he took the only job that was offered to him even though it only gives a minimum wage. Eventually, he decided to go back to Indonesia and try his luck there. As a result, after reading the first 27 pages of the novel, I found that the novel is pretty entertaining but I disagree with some of the character’s opinion. Still, I feel that Young Ju is a very enjoyable character to read.
