Lisa's opinion
From the last part of the story, after Apa get out from police officer, Apa is leaving with a woman and he decides to go back to Korea. However, Uhmma decides the right decision to stay in America and she knows that she and her children are strong enough to live in America without Apa. I think Uhmma has already seen how her children are strong and can help her even though she is not living with Apa. For example, when Young Ju and Joon are helping at Uncle Tim’s ice cream, Joon get paid $30 and give to Young Ju his $20 to buy for groceries. Also, Young Ju can make rice. These examples show that even Uhmma who always work until late to support her family, her children can do most of the things independently. After that, they move to a house with 2 bedrooms. Then, Uhmma is arranging Young Ju’s clothes into neat piles for the dresser hey will share. After that, Young Ju sees a box which full of memories. Young Ju look at her photo with Apa hold her up. She also looks at Uhmma’s family. She is curious why she never sees this photo before. It is because Apa does not like to see that photo which remind him where Uhmma came from. Uhmma’s family is rich. It might be make Apa does not like it and feel more pressure from that photo. And the last part, An Na describes how Uhmma and her children are harmonies to each other. They support each other and happy with their situation. I think in this last part of the novel, I agree with Uhmma who makes that decision for her and her children. Even though she has to work extra time to support her family, it is worth it because they can have a deep relationship among them. And it is good for them that they do not need to stay with Apa. He is very strange and act so cruel to the family. I think a family is not like what Apa wants. A family must be harmonies and build each other up. In my family, my parents do not really push me to do what they want. They give me freedom to choose and say whatever that I do not agree with. And I am more thankful after I read this novel that helps me to see how great God already give me a blessing to be raised up in my family.
