(Reaction to the first 27 pages of Step From Heaven) by Jiyeun LEE
First of all, I really like this book. This book is interesting. It is easy to understand to me because I am also Korean. I can easily understand meaning of Apa or Uhmma. When I found these kinds of Korean words in this book, I am so glad to see these words.
Young- Ju is young and very cute Korean little girl. Her parents want to immigrant to America for better opportunity in their life and Young Ju’s life.
I think, in past America is seems like heaven to Korean because America’s income is higher than Korea therefore people have “America Dream’ in their minds. They think when they live in America; they can earn a lot of money. But now many Korean did not think like that because Korea is richer than past time so people’s mind are changed and also America is changed.
When I read this book, I remind my childhood. She is exactly like me.
I really like Young Gu. She is so cute. I hate curly hair lik her when I was young. She doesn’t want to leave her grandmother. I can understand her. I also miss my grandmother. I am a Christian like her. When I was young I think same like her. On page 21, the Young Gu thinks “God is angry I called him a liar.” I thought same like her. When I did bad things, God will know that so I stop bad things and pray to God. I am really dreaming about heaven like her. It is really fun to read this book. Author uses so many lovely sentences. It is exactly based on Young ju’s point of view. I am really look forward to what will be happened next page. Anyway, I think it is interesting. Can Curly hair makes her looks like a real American girl? I think so. I think it is not true. She has black eyes and black hair. She can not be an ordinary American girl.
Based on my experience, I think America is not ‘heaven’ but America still has many fascinating things to people. That is reason why I am here and study in OSU and people all over the world want to come America. In America, we can experience a lot of differences of culture. It is really helps me to understand different culture in the world. It makes me open mined to different races.
